So whats the difference between flat and round cables? Now days – nothing performance wise. Back when flat cables where first manufactured there was an issue relating to interference. To understand this we will have to delve into why a standard cable is round.

An typical cable consists of an even number of small wires, which are split into pairs. These wires transmit digital signals through wire. The proper term for this is differential signaling. During the digital pulse, each  wire pair carries a signal of the same voltage but opposite polarity. During this process, interference is produced – electromagnetic radiation and crosstalk. Both types of interference introduce noise, which if there is enough of, will cause the receiver to misread what was sent – leading to lost packets and (sometimes extreme) reduced performance.

So why is it round? Twists! Confused? Let me elaborate.

The small pairs of wires that I briefly mentioned before are twisted together in a way that 2 wires from an adjacent pair are not next to each other the entire length of cable. This allows the receiver to filter out the interference using common-mode rejection. If the adjacent wires were next to each other the entire cable, this would skew the results by adding cross talk to only one leg, which would reduce the ability of the receiver to accurately filter the noise.

So how is this relevant to you?

When flat cables first hit the market, this was not taken into consideration and the performance of these cables over long distances were extremely poor. This led to a negative first impression of these cables. To offset the interference, all new (well, for the high quality products at least) are shielded the entire length of the journey, which negates the vast majority of the interference over long distances.

So here at Video Conferencing Australia, we will only sell products with a quality that adheres to our high standards. As such, we will never stock a Flat HDMI Cable that is over 10m in length, as over that length there is a performance drop. From lengths under 10m the performance of a flat cable is on par with that of a round cable.

So what are the benefits of this cable?
